The three major areas that will see improvements to defensive gameplay, per the latest deep dive, are AI defending, manual defending, and teammate contain.

AI Defending

Perhaps the most frustrating bit with every EA FC gameplay is AI defending. At times, they're way too powerful, while other times they act completely daft.

The latter is much less of an issue, as it promotes skillful gameplay by manual defending. FC 27 is leaning towards it as well by making AI defending much less reliable.

AI will no longer perform tackles. They'll provide positioning and support the play until you take control and choose when to make a tackle. Unless the opponents dribble straight into them, they won't be arsed to make a ball-winning tackle.

Likewise, other AI defending actions, like interceptions, have been nerfed with limited range compared to manual.

Manual defending improvements

One way to make AI defending less meta is by making manual defending more powerful and reliable. That hasn't always been the case with past titles.

For FC 27, the goal is to reward "players who manually switch, jockey, time tackles, and position themselves effectively to increase their chances of winning possession."

The range of jockey (L2) sprints, interceptions, and standing tackles has been increased. The deep dive showed a much better range of interceptions if you controlled the defender, whereas the AI would just watch the ball.

Teammate Contain

Teammate Contain is another mechanic that has often been abused. You'd simply press R1 and have your player press and mark the opponent's ball carrier.

Now, AI teammates will mark the ball carrier from a slightly longer distance than before. Enough to not create as much pressure, and they won't win you possession until you switch yourself.

With all the attacking improvements like spatial awareness, improved creative runs, off-balance dribbling, and revamped corners, these defending changes will be even more meaningful.

All of these changes appear positive. But they'll only matter if they aren't undone later by updates and balancing changes.
