In a move that seems to be the new standard for sports games, 2K revealed all the information about NBA 2K27 in one fell swoop during a live broadcast titled Preseason Breakdown: Game Reveal.
Gameplay changes were at the forefront of the reveal, with new features being introduced and improvements to already existing ones showcased.
Without further ado, let's find out what the NBA 2K27 gameplay has in store.
NBA 2K27 Gameplay Changes

Rhythm Shooting is one of the features that received improvements in NBA 2K27, with the shot meter now showing a real-time visual indicator that moves in sync with your joystick input.
The goal is to help you master the release time of every single jumpshot in the game. The better you are at matching the animation tempo, the bigger your green window will be.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, and Luka Dončić now have the step-through up-and-under as one of their signature moves. Other stars also received new signature moves, all captured via ProPLAY.
Dribbling customization is one of the biggest changes this year. In NBA 2K27, there are no signature dribbling packages; you have individual moves that you can customize at will, allowing you to combine moves from your favorite players.
The Dynamic Layup Engine is coming to NBA 2K27 to ensure no two finishes at the rim look the same. Players' movements will now better reflect their signature style and attributes when finishing at the rim.
Perhaps the biggest addition to NBA 2K27 gameplay-wise is the Dunk Meter. Dunking now requires actual skill, as with most actions in the game; dunk attempts need to be timed.
The Dunk Meter green window will be affected by closeouts or open lanes, with defensive positioning always being taken into consideration to determine how big the window is.
NBA 2K27 is also introducing new advanced controls, which are basically more streamlined ways to perform a mechanic, for alley-ops, no-look passes, and signature combos.
Executing these moves was never as easy, and it's another attempt by 2K to simplify the game and lower the entrance barrier.
But offense wasn't the only gameplay area that saw improvements, as defense was also revamped to give defenders more tools, both on the perimeter and the interior.

Defense in NBA 2K27 will be more aggressive and physical. On the perimeter, defenders will use a more aggressive hands-up approach when guarding shooters, closing their air space as much as possible.
When using this more aggressive form of defense, players will automatically contest any shot or layup.
But if, just like Karl Anthony Towns, you find yourself in foul trouble, you can opt to play conservative hands-up defense by simply holding down the right joystick.
AI defenders have also been improved, as they do a better job at contesting shots, holding their positions, and playing better hands-up defense.
The brand-new defensive cutoff mechanic gives defenders more options to close driving lanes and react to dribble moves and escape combos, allowing defenders to play aggressively throughout the whole possession.
Still on the physical defense topic, a new collision system was added to better reward great physical and disciplined defense.
The steal range was also reworked to prevent unrealistic steals and force players to actually play good defense if they want the ball back.
All of these changes mean offensive players now need to be more objective with their moves and drives, especially in traffic.
Last but not least, the Takeover system was completely overhauled. Now, attributes from each of the five categories, Shooting, Finishing, Playmaking, Defense, and Rebounding, will be impacted individually.
For example, if you are running the floor, your passing attributes will see an increase. However, if you can't hit a shot to save your life, your shooting attributes will be negatively impacted.
There are six tiers to the new Takeover system: Frozen, Cold, Neutral, Warm, Hot, and Takeover. With this new system, you can be hot in multiple areas of the game, such as shooting, playmaking, and defense.
Once you max out one of the categories, the equipped takeover for it will automatically activate, with a timer indicating how long it will be active.
There are over 24 takeover abilities spread across the five categories for you to choose from.
This is everything you need to know about the NBA 2K27 gameplay changes.
NBA 2K27 releases September 4, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
