You can create a female MyPLAYER in NBA 2K27 and take her into The City. Not to go into a social, sim-like game, of course, but what I'm talking about is more of a co-ed situation on the same courts and in the same lobbies as everyone else.
That is something of a first for a franchise that's been running since 1999, and to be quite honest, it's about damn time. But it's not the only thing worth paying attention to.
MyCAREER now has five playable eras stretching back to 1984; the story mode runs 11 chapters with Vince Staples voicing a lead character, and ProPLAY has pulled more than 7,000 new animations from real NBA footage.
Here's what to expect if you're still not convinced about getting NBA 2K27 this year:
Badge Tokens
Every build now gets 20 badge slots split across the usual shooting, finishing, playmaking, defense, rebounding, and physicals. All 20 slots are immediately available when you enter the city. You need to earn badge tokens to fill them.
Each trait has its own meter that fills based on what you do on the court. Finish at the rim, and your finishing meter climbs. Make good passes that turn into points, and your playmaking meter rises.
Your tokens can be reassigned at any time if you change your mind, which is probably the best quality-of-life improvement 2K has made in years.
The only catch is that not every badge can be equipped at the same time, and tokens earned through in-game events are locked to their respective traits.
Rebirth Returns With 4 Tiers
Once a build hits 90 overall, rebirth starts your next one at the highest rating you previously reached. Each new build also unlocks a percentage of its badge tokens.
So at tier 4, every default badge token is already unlocked the moment you create a new build.
Synergy Is How You Get Legend Badges Now
The Synergy system has 8 slots. Six of them give a +1 boost, and the other two give +2. So, a bronze badge with +1 becomes Silver, and a gold badge with +2 becomes Legend.

You got that right. Male and female MyPLAYERS compete side by side across every mode in the city, including The REC, Theater, Street Kings, Park, Proving Grounds, Ante-Up, and Starting Five.
For your build, being male or female here is mostly cosmetic, and height, wingspan, badges, and attribute ratings depend on how you build your character.
Crew HQ
The Crew HQ is a new home base where you can customize your crew's uniform and logo, with every member's jersey hanging in the rafters.
There are 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 half courts plus 3v3 and 5v5 full courts for practice. You can also matchmake with other rival crews for a game.
Casual Corner
An optional space for new players. Rookie-friendly 3v3 and 5v5 games start in a PvE format at the casual tier before graduating to real opponents.
It's a way to get new players hooked on the game, since I think we can all agree that The City can be hostile to newcomers, so this one is a bit overdue.

Each era features different rosters, but what I'm excited to try out is how you can rewrite history.
Can you outshine Magic and Bird during their rivalry era? Deny the GOAT Michael Jordan his 6th ring? Or take on the Miami Heat with D-Wade and Prime LeBron?
The eras mode is one of the more underrated game modes in NBA 2K, and it's great to see that it's getting a new spin.
Fire & Concrete Plus New Co-Op Mode
If you're going to ask if there are any major changes to the story? That answer is still going to be a big NO.
The story in NBA 2K27 still follows your MyPlayer from high school, but instead of going overseas, you go through the G League and into the NBA, much like Jordan Clarkson's career.
It's not the best narrative, but story isn't really this game's strong suit, and I'd argue it's not even why we play NBA 2K.
Co-Op
In Co-Op, you team up with a friend as a running mate named Trace. There are 9 build templates for him modelled on superstar archetypes like Giannis, Steph, and KD, and you can also earn points to upgrade him as you go.
If your friend isn't online, he's going to be played by an AI. Both players earn full VC and season XP throughout.
However, I'm a bit torn about NBA 2K27's Co-Op mode: while it's nice to take on the entire story with a real-life friend who can play alongside me, it's hard to justify anyone wanting to be Robin if they can be Batman in their own game.
Finally, Some Defense This Year
The best builds in the last NBA 2K installment were guards and outside shooting.
This year, interior scoring is stronger, and three-point shooting is tougher, which means that slashers and big men should be the go-to builds early on.
Two Types of Hands-Up Defense
There are now two kinds of hands-up defense. Hold the right stick down for a more "conservative" hands-up defense, which keeps your feet planted and hands up; you won't jump, but you'll also avoid drawing fouls.
Or you can hold the right stick up to be more proactive on defense. This makes contesting shots a little bit easier, meaning that drawing fakes will be a bit harder.
Dribble Moves Are Broken Apart
Triple Threat used to bundle 4 or 5 moves into a package. In NBA 2K27, the stance, jabs, step-overs, and side steps are separate selections.
Size-up packages are split into behind-the-back escape, hesi escape, and cross escape. You can mix and match these on your builds.
Step-Through and the Dunk Meter
The Dunk Meter is now fully dynamic in NBA 2K27. Whereas before it stayed static regardless of what happened mid-air, the green window now expands on an open lane and shrinks against even a late closeout.
MyTEAM and MyNBA

What's exciting here is that MyNBA has become more realistic. There are now 10-day contracts, contract buyouts for when you want some cap space during the season, 4-team trades, and even cash considerations.

This iteration of NBA 2K might have the most changes under the hood the series has made in years, and to be fair, most of them are pointed at problems that actually needed fixing.
For me, the changes in MyNBA alone are enough to convince me to get this game. Now, all I need to figure out is how to trade a player for a copy machine, like Kyle Korver.
